Living Room of the Community
We feel the library should be the "living room" of the community -- a place for people to meet, relax, spend some quality free-time, and engage with lively discussion or quiet thought. To assist this goal, the library has recently opened a coffee lounge in the front of the library. We'll be serving fair-trade, organic coffee (Cafe Wren's exclusive "Wren Blend) and a tasty selection of chai and tea. There is plenty of space to sit with friends, do homework, or surf the web on your laptop, all while watching the hustle and bustle of Milltown Main Street. Check out this new service soon!

Wii Tourney
Thanks to a grant from Polk-Burnett Operation Round-Up, the library will host its first video game tournament for all teenagers on March 7. The only requirement to participate is that you are: a) 13-18 years old, and b) like to have fun. The competition begins at 6 p.m., and winners will receive free books and more! We’ll have free pizza and soda for dinner. Please sign up in advance so that we can have enough food for everyone. Bring your friends and challenge them at all the coolest Nintendo Wii games. Play your favorite games on our big screen. Test your skills against the librarian or a village cop! Also, we’ll announce how teens can have more access to the library’s Wii. If you don’t have a library card, you can sign up for one at the Wii Tourney. If you do have a library card and it has fines, you will still be able to participate.

Mark your calendars
2008 is shaping up to be a big year at Milltown Public Library -- mask-making, candy-making, and book-making are already scheduled, we're planning a exciting schedule for TV-turn off week in April, three acts are booked for Summer Reading Program, and the library will host a hilarious performance by the author of "Pumpkin Town" during Milltown's Pumpkin Fest. We're also starting to replace our old public-access computers this year, and will be adding thousands of new books and movies to the collection of course. Thanks for your support in 2008!

Frozen
Are you leaving town for awhile and you’re almost at the top of the list? Does it look like too many things will come at the same time? You can now place your holds "on ice." When you freeze a hold, you will keep your place in line while the line moves up. If your hold reaches the top of the holds list before you “unfreeze” your hold, it will stay there. Other holds will skip over it until you reactivate your hold.

Window to the World
The library is truly a window to the world, with a wide variety of books and movies to introduce us to other people and places. But our new travelogue/lecture series takes "Window to the World" to a new level. Our first presentation, about Haiti, attracted a nicely-sized crowd. Make plans to arrive early for the January 26 presentation about Chiapas, Mexico at 2 p.m., led by Andrew Jensen. Library Director Matt Rosendahl will discuss post-apartheid South Africa on February 2 at 2 p.m.

A New Book Club
It's not back -- It's all new. That's right -- we're starting a book club at the Milltown Public Library, and we're breaking out of the "book-club rut." No more assignments. No more discussion questions. No more embarrassment over not finishing the book. The new book club will simply be an open discussion where attendees can talk with each other about the books they've read, or are reading. One thing will remain the same: we will still have tasty refreshments. The Milltown Public Library is very excited to offer a time and place for bibliophiles and literary looky-loos to gather, talk, and inspire each other to seek out good books. Join us on Monday, November 5th at 7 p.m. for our first gathering at the library, where we can decide what sort of structure this new group will have (if any), choose a name for the group, and establish a good meeting time. For those unable to attend, the books we discussed and important announcements about the group will be posted on this blog. If you have any suggestions or ideas for this new book club, please contact the library at milltownpl@ifls.lib.wi.us, or post to this blog entry for all to see!

Video games at the library? No way. Way! (well, maybe...)
We're thinking about adding video games to our lending collections. If we are able to make this addition, we want to do it right. So, tell us... What are the titles of video games you'd like to borrow from the library? What is your preferred video game system? Wii, Playstation3, XBox 360, Gamecube, PC, or Mac?
