Book Review: Birthmarked by Caragh O'Brien
For those fans of Katniss in the Hunger Games, a new heroine has emerged in the book Birthmarked by Caragh O'Brien. The story is set 300 years after Lake Michigan has completely dried up and become Unlake Michigan. Certain privileged classes now live in the walled city called the Enclave, while others live in the decrepit villages surrounding the Enclave. Villagers are required to give up up the first three babies born each month to be raised by families in the Enclave. Sixteen year old Gaia Stone helps her mother deliver village babies. Her parents are arrested one night and Gaia bravely attempts to enter the Enclave to rescue them. Will she succeed? Can she trust the son of the high est Enclave official, the Protectorat, or will he betray her and lead her to her death?

CCPL Partners with CCJDC

Since 2009, CCPL has partnered with the Clermont County Juvenile Detention Center; it's a collaboration that librarian Lori Osting believes in strongly. "We're trying to make the library more visible and accessible to the young people in our local detention center," she says.

During her bi-monthly visits, she helps the young men and women choose books and encourages them to visit the library after they’re released. "The library program at detention helps to establish an environment where the youth value books and embrace their right to read," says Osting.

Response from the detained youths has been positive. “[The library program] has helped with picking books I know I will like,” said one young man.

Another youth commented, “[The library program] keeps me occupied in reading and gets me interested in books.” He continued, “I really appreciate [Miss Osting] coming out for us. No one else much cares about juvenile delinquents.”

If you're interested in learning more about the program and how you can help, contact Lori via email or by calling (513) 735-7182.

I love the library, because I have always loved the library! Visiting it today, reminds me of walking to the library when I was growing up. I like it today & I like the warm and happy memories it brings. As a junior high and high school student, I volunteered in the school library. I respect and admire the Dewey Decimal system!

I take my sons to the library, we visit the Batavia branch the most. We love utilizing the library's resources, its a wonderful part of the community. The boys head straight to the children's area to pick out books, dvds, and also to play with the toys and blocks. Thank you for making our library such a wonderful place!

In my opinion, our local library is one of the friendliest and most fun places around! I visit the Miami Township Branch weekly, and I look forward to each visit with enthusiasm and anticipation. The library has such a nice selection of materials, but if I want something the branch does not carry, the staff will work tirelessly to track down the desired information. When we moved to Milford from out of state several years ago, one of the first friends I met was Marlene the librarian. Knowing very few and having two small children, Marlene was such a lifesaver at the time. She was a welcoming and familiar face in what was otherwise often a lonely week. The library and its staff has so much to offer. From reading materials, movies and documentaries, internet, and friendly faces, the library will definitely give everyone something to love.

The staff of CCPL is very friendly and helpful. The library is not so big that you feel lost and not so small that you feel that there is not a very good selection of books. I love the fact that if your branch does not have a book that you are looking for you can easily order it from another branch or source. When I was a Freshmen in High School I read a book called God Is My Copilot for a book report. I liked the book so much that I wanted to read it again but they did not have it at the library. I inquired about the book and they checked for me and it was not at any of the other branches but they found it for me from another source and ordered it in. I also love the fact that you have the biggest selection of l arge print books. I have trouble reading small print and with the large print I do not have to squint anymore and can still have the enjoyment of reading a good book.

With an apology to all poets....

The month of February Can be awfully scary
Filled with snow, ice and sleet
Frozen face, hands and feet.
It’s so hard to stay warm
Or even dream of the charm
Of a lush early spring
Chirping birds on the wing.
But the Public Library Is a really good fairy!
She brings life to the room
As she drives off the gloom.
So generous with herself-
Offerings on every shelf.
With one come-hither look
Wow! I'm reading a book!
Soon I’m lost in the heat
Of a southern retreat.
Now the world’s bright and sunny A
nd magically funny.
Sometimes it’s mysterious
Or factually serious
I am transported away
From this cold dreary day.
Yippee yee, yippee yay!

Spotlight: NoveList Database

NoveList is your one-stop destination for all things fiction! This versatile tool offers a multitude of resources for readers of all ages, including author biographies, award winner lists, book discussion guides, booktalks, curricular connections, and more.

One favorite use of this resource is finding author read-alikes. For selected authors, typing the name of the author into the search box yields a list of authors who write similar works. This is perfect for folks who are looking for their next read but aren’t sure what to choose. The various feature articles are yet another unique benefit of NoveList. Written by librarians across the country, these feature articles are full of reading recommendations for virtually all tastes, interests, and levels.

NoveList is the perfect resource for teachers, parents, bibliophiles, and reluctant readers alike. It can be found on our Research and Homework database page, along with many of our other databases. As always, if you have questions about this e-resource, consult a librarian.

Wishlist

CCPL now has an Amazon wishlist. When you purchase an item from the list, it's sent directly to the Library and added to our collection.

Your support is important. According to Holly Varley, the Collection Development Manager, "Due to state cuts, our budget for books is less than half of what it was last year. A donation from this list supports local authors and illustrators, while providing our community with local interest titles that we may not be able to purchase otherwise."

Our family is new to the area, and we've been pleasantly surprised by the services and books/movies available to us at our Milford branch! I am eager to start the literacy kits with our 2 year old. We are also learning to use the online features of the library, and they are great too! I love the "2009 book favorites" compiled by library staff members. We LOVE the library!!!

There are many reason why I love the library here are just a few. It is a place to bring the kids that is quiet, respectful, and kid friendly. I love reading and they have a great selection of books and if they don't have one they do what it takes to get one. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful.

The staff at the Union Twp. branch are awesome. They make the library a place my family and I look forward to going to quite often. They are hard working and go out of their way to be helpful. They are also extremely friendly, if there ever having a bad day, you would never know it. I wish we received that kind of service everywhere we went!
